To start it off, the Cubs' own Carlos Zambrano and Michael Barrett got into it in the dugout following a horrible fifth inning. What happened was Zambrano threw a wild pitch which got away from Barrett, who quickly scrambled to grab the ball and throw out the player running to third. Instead, the ball ended up in left field, the runner making it easily to the third bag.
All seemed well, until Carlos approached his catcher during the bottom of the fifth inning. He pointed to his own head and yelled, before taking a swing a Barrett. The two were quickly divided by to Lou Piniella the manager, two hitting coaches, plus many other Cubs players and Zambrano, whose day was over after having a horrid outing, walked away and into the clubhouse.
Just when we all thought it was done, we hear later that the fight "spilled over" into the clubhouse where Barrett was hit in the face a couple times by his fellow teammate Zambrano and, finally, slammed into a locker. Michael Barrett was later sent to the hospital with a cut lip and two black eyes, where he received six or seven stitches.
Pathetic. Not describing the fight itself, but to describe Carlos Zambrano. What a loser. First, right before the start of the season, "Big Z" as they call him, guaranteed his fans a World Series AND a Cy Young Award...BOTH in the same season. Now, the Chicago Cubs are 24-31 with a .436 winning percentage. Plus, they are 6 and a half games behind the first place Milwaukee Brewers...in probably the weakest division (NL Central) in all of baseball, so, hate to break it to you Cubs fans, but I think Zambrano lied to you, though, I wish he hadn't because, even though my first love is the Cleveland Indians, I wanted them to do well this season! ='(
The thing, though, that really bothers me? Not the fact that the fight happened, like, two or three days after the Cubs had a team meeting where they "expressed" how they felt. Not the fact two teammates fought each other. But, the fact that Carlos Zambrano is, once again, blaming everyone but himself.
As if the Cubs woes weren't bad enough, it was announced today that Lou Piniella was suspended 4 games (he had already served one) for his on-field, dirt-kicking tirade. This club needs a boost and fast because if nothing happens, they will be out of every race in baseball by the end of this month.
But that doesn't seem to be affecting them as they have won two straight games without "Sweet Lou". =D
Other notable ejections include Gary Sheffield of Detroit on Thursday vs. the Indians. Sheffield was suspended three games, but has not served them yet because of appeal. Then, on Friday night against the Cleveland Indians, Tigers manager Jim Leyland was ejected while defending his already ejected player Justin Verlander. He was not pitching the game, but the home-plate umpire said he was "chirping in his ear all night long" so, he tossed him.
The Chicago White Sox manager Ozzie Guillen was ejected, as well. I think he is just frustrated now. The ChiSox aren't having one of their best seasons with just 26 wins and 27 losses, a winning % of .491 and 7 games behind my first place Indians and Ozzie just lost it the other day. I have to say, I really do not blame him.
And then, the biggest melt down of the week is awarded to the Mississippi Braves Double-A Minor League Manager Phillip Wellman. There was obviously a call he did not like and the man went crazy. And I mean crazy. If you have not seen it yet, search YouTube, search something and find this video. Funniest thing I have ever seen. Wellman has been suspended by the Atlanta Braves for 3 games.
